YEAR 2009

The 9th year in the 3rd millenium is drawing to an end and lets look at the important events of 2009...

Apart from being called as the "International year of astronomy" it has also been designated by the U.N General Assembly as the "International year of Natural fibres".

I have collected these data from various monthly magazines and Wikipedia more stress laid on the Indian events with some of the very important international events too.



JANUARY:

• On January 20th,Barack Obama became the first African American President of the U.S.He is the 44th President and previously served as the junior U.S Senator.Later in the year he was also the Nobel peace prize laureate,not to talk about about whether he really deserves it in this context.He is the 4th U.S President to be honoured with the Nobel peace prize.


• Satyam computer systems chairman Ramalinga Raju publicly announces his involvement in the accounting fraud followed by Maytas acquistion controversies.

FEBRUARY :

• 2009 satellite colision between the Russian and American communication atellites in Siberia on February 10th.This is the 9th known high speed collision.


• Israel Defence Forces invaded the Gaza strip killing almost 1500 people.


• India testfired BrahMos which is a supersonic cruise missile,from a vertical launcher in Bay of Bengal.

MARCH:

• Gunmen attacked a bus carrying Sri Lankan cricketers in Lahore,Pakistan leaving Pakistan an unsafe place to play cricket.The implications were that the 2009 IPL was moved to South Africa.
• The Kepler mission was used by NASA to discover Earth-like planets in the milky way galaxy.
• The Congress chairperson and Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan ranked among the 50 most powerful people in the world by Newsweek,a U.S based magazine.

APRIL :

• The second G-20 summit meets in London


• Spread of influenza AH1N1 also called as Swine flu from Mexico was confirmed by the World Health Organisation.These viruses resulted in death.


• Porsche which makes sports cars has taken over Volkswagen.

MAY:

• SriLankan civil war came to an end.and the LTTE leader Vellupillai Prabahakaran was declared dead.


• A.R.Rahman was honoured with 2 academy awards for "Best Original Score" and "Best Original Song"for the film Slumdog millionaire.

JUNE:

• Air France Flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris crashes into the Atlantic killing everyone on board.


• Swine flu declared as Pandemic


• NASA launches LCROSS in the moon.This is the first U.S lunar mission in over 10 years.


• The King of Pop,the winner of 13 grammy awards,Michael jackson leaving the entire world in grief.

JULY:

• The longest total solar eclipse of the 21st century occurs over some of the parts of Asia.


• Nandan Nilekani, recipient of Padma Bhushan left Infosys as the co-chirman to serve as the chairperson of UIDAI(Unique IdentificationAuthority of India)in the rank of cabinet minister.


• Deccan chargers won the IPL2 in South Africa.

AUGUST :

• Venkatraman Ramakrishnan was awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize in chemistry "for studies of the structure and function of the ribosome".Tamil Nadu gets its third laureate after Sir CV Raman and Subrahmanya Chandrashekhar.


• Tech Mahindra,the new owner of Satyam computer services following the Satyam scam rechristened the firm as "Mahindra Satyam".

SEPTEMBER:

• G-20 summit at Pittsburgh.


• Asia's equivalent of the Nobel Prize,prestigious Ramon Magsaysay awards was awarded to the Indian social activist-Deep Joshi.


• The chief minister of Andhra Pradesh Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy died in a chopper crash in the Nalla mala forest region following which K.Rosaiah has been sworn in as the new C.M of Andhra Pradesh.

OCTOBER:

• Miss Venezuela Stefania Fernanadez has been named winner of the 2009 Miss Universe pageant in Bahamas.


• Indian skipper Mahendra singh Dhoni topped the list of world's 10 top earning cricketers by Forbes magazine.


• Prakashraj and Umashree bagged the Best actor and Best actress awards in the National Film Awards.

NOVEMBER:

• LCROSS data is used to analyse existence of water in the Moon's crater.

DECEMBER :

• Copenhagen climate change conference 2009 with the aim to a worldwide deal for the dangerous global warming.India has to cut the emissions intensity by 20-25% by 2020.This summit was not attributed to be very successful and the next climate change conference has been planned in Mexico.
